An article on the National Cancer Institute web site describes a cancer cell as cell that begins to divide without stopping and spreads into surrounding tissues. Normal cells die and are replaced with new cells. However, the cancer cells continue to grow and spread. They can also form new cells which divide and grow.

Cancer can be a tumor or in the blood. The tumors invade other cells and spread and grow. They can get very large and usually return if surgically removed.

Cancer can be inherited, caused by a malfunction of a cell, or by toxic external forces such as smoke or radiation.
